The Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) is seeking the public’s help to find a person of interest in a Santa Ana fatal motorcycle hit and run accident. On Monday afternoon, a Maroon Honda struck a motorcyclist in Modjeska Canyon, sending the 55 year old biker to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The maroon Honda was reported stolen from a tow lot, and camera footage from the lot showed a person walking all the way around the car before getting into it and driving away. The man was identified as a “person of interest” and the public is asked to help identify them and call the OCSD Major Accident Reconstruction Team at (949) 425-1860. Anonymous tips can also be made to OC Crime Stoppers (855) TIP-OCCS. The Santa Ana fatal motorcycle hit and run accident is another example of recent wave of motorists leaving the scene of an accident here in Orange County.
The Sheriffs will have questions for the person about the crash, and the potential wrongful death of the motorcyclist. If apprehended and charged, the suspect would first face criminal charges such as vehicular homicide or leaving the scene of a fatal accident. The wrongful death case brought by the family of the motorcyclist would follow the criminal case. The criminal case provides valuable evidence which makes the wrongful death civil action easier to prove. In hit and run accidents, injured motorists can turn to their own automobile policy’s UM/UIM or uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage in order to recover financially for injuries received from a hit and run driver.
