However, the owner of the pit bull fought an appeal and won. As a result, his pit bull was removed from the “vicious dog” designation and the dog no longer had to wear a muzzle or short leash when in public. Fast forward to June of this year, when while walking on the beach, a pregnant woman was attacked and bitten by this pit bull while walking down a Huntington Beach neighborhood. The attack tore off part of her arm, and she had to be rushed to the hospital. Her injuries were so severe that doctors were forced to induce labor on her and perform a cesarean section. Luckily, her baby was born healthy. However, the attack left substantial and permanent injuries, including nerve damage.
Much criticism has been levied towards Orange County officials who reversed their designation of the pit-bull as “vicious” in the appeal. If the pit bull had been muzzled and on a short leash as originally required by the county animal control, this second gruesome attack could have been avoided entirely.
