There have been some recent high profile lawsuit settlements against different cities in Orange County for the injuries caused by law enforcement dogs. In one instance, during the course of a search for crime suspects, an Anaheim police dog attacked an 86 year old man unrelated to the search. As a result of the dog bites, the 86 year old man suffered from severe injuries to his arms. The man received $240,000 in legal settlements with the city. Another high profile case from Orange County involves a police dog that escaped from its handler and attacked a crowd that had gathered around a crime scene.
It is clear that law enforcement canines can be very vicious in their attacks and cause significant injuries. If these dogs attack innocent victims, or are used unnecessarily, there may be a basis for a lawsuit for the injuries sustained.
