A horrific fatal accident on I-5 in Irvine last evening resulted in the wrongful death of one man, and serious burns and injuries to other drivers. According to the California Highway Patrol a 1994 Dodge Van was driving at an unsafe speed. The van was travelling northbound on the I-5 at near the Irvine Tustin line at an unsafe speed for conditions, and plowed into the back of a vehicle in front of it. That vehicle was then shoved into another vehicle, and ultimately two additional cars became involved in the accident.
Unfortunately, fire broke out in the first vehicle struck by the Dodge van engulfing the car with the driver trapped inside. The fire spread to the Dodge van as well. The driver of the first car hit by the Dodge van did not survive the accident. The driver of the Dodge van was trapped, but was rescued by others at the scene. One victim with severe burns, and another victim with serious injuries were transported to local hospitals.
Too often there is a fatal accident on I-5 in Irvine as drivers are distracted, or travelling at an unsafe rate of speed for the type of “accordion traffic” (where traffic compacts and expands on and off). When a person loses their life in a fatal car accident in California it is known as a wrongful death. The family of the driver of the first car struck appears to have a valid action for a wrongful death due to the negligence of the driver of the Dodge van. Those (other than the driver of the van) who suffered injuries also have injury claims requiring the attention of an experienced attorney.
