Orange County police task force has recently been heavily targeting the illegal street race scene. A recent raid broke up an illegal street race meet up involving over 50 vehicles in the city of Costa Mesa, near the Santa Ana River. Multiple drivers were arrested for crimes ranging from: driving under the influence, street racing, expired licenses, and bench warrants. The reason police are targeting these illegal street races is due to their unregulated and dangerous driving that often result in fatal car accidents and in some cases a wrongful death.
Vehicles engaged in illegal street races often do not obey traffic signals and violate laws by driving dangerous and at a very high rate of speed. It can cause immediate danger to other drivers on the road and/or to pedestrians near these activities. There have been many highly publicized and reported incidents wherein vehicles engaged in street racing have collided with other vehicles on the road to cause massive injuries and even fatal car accidents. Drivers responsible can be liable for any damages or injuries they cause to other drivers, and furthermore will often have criminal liability for their actions and crimes as well.
