A Holtville truck accident has claimed at least 14 lives this morning in Imperial County California. A big rig ran into the side of an SUV carrying 24 passengers. The SUV was designed to carry up to 8 people. The result of the high speed impact has resulted in a substantial and tragic loss of life.
In this case, original reports from CHP at the scene believe the SUV pulled out in front of the oncoming truck from a side road. Police are not sure if the SUV ran a stop sign or completed the stop prior to pulling out. It is also unclear what the relationship was between the driver of the SUV and the occupants. If the driver of the SUV was an employer, the victims of this accident could potentially have a valid injury or wrongful death claim against the owner(s) of the SUV.
Accidents in Imperial County near the US – Mexico border are unfortunately quite frequent. This incident did not involve border protection agents and was not the result of a chase. However, of the more than 500 high speed pursuits in a recent 2018 study over a third of the episodes resulted in a crash.
The Holtville truck accident has claimed at least 14 lives and there are many questions regarding who was at fault and why were there so many people in such a small SUV. While it does not appear to be the case, if the truck driver had caused the accident the loss of life would be regarded as a wrongful death under California law. Truck accidents are especially dangerous and often deadly due to the weight and momentum of a big rig vehicle. When a car accident involves a semi-truck the resulting injuries are often quite severe, resulting in permanent injury and disability.
When injuries or loss of life is due to the negligence of another party our law firm pursues the maximum possible financial recovery to cover all medical bills, lost wages, future medical and pharmaceutical expenses and compensation for having to endure recovery from any injury. When a person loses their life due to the negligence of another driver, a wrongful death lawsuit seeks compensation on behalf of the surviving family.
