Costa Mesa Company Invents Airbag Outfits for Motorcylists

A local Costa Mesa company has recently announced the development of apparel for motorcyclists that includes airbags.  The technology is designed to protect the shoulders, collar bones and spine of the rider.  While this technology has been available in Europe for several years, this will mark the first time it is available here in the US.

The suit deploys helium based airbags that are activated by sensors that detect rapid changes in the driver’s aspect.  The suits have been used in motorcycle racing for the past few years, and have a good safety record.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, 4600 people died in fatal motorcycle accidents across the United States in 2013.  Helmets saved the lives of an additional estimated 1700 bikers involved in injury accidents.  The airbag suits may help to save additional lives, and protect US motorcycle riders from more serious injuries in motorcycle accidents.
